What is The Opportunity Maine Program?
Opportunity Maine is a new program that will make college more affordable for Maine students. Beginning with any loans that a student takes in January 2008, he or she will be eligible to claim a large tax credit to pay students loans after they graduate. Businesses are also eligible for the tax credit if they agree to pay a students' loan.
Who is eligible for the Opportunity Maine Program?
To be eligible, graduates must work and pay taxes in Maine after they finish school - but there are no restrictions on leaving Maine for graduate school or programs such as the Peace Corps.
Do I have to be a Maine resident to qualify?
All Maine college students are eligible. As long as you live in Maine during the school year while you attend college, you can sign up. You could move from Texas to Maine on your first day of college and still be eligible! After graduation, you can claim the credit any year you make loan payments and live and work in Maine.
How do I enroll?
Download the Opportunity Maine contract and fill it out. After you're done, bring it to your financial aid office.
